"Bryson City Is Not A City"

    Artist Statement

    Bryson City isn't really a city at all. It’s a small town of stop signs and gravel roads. It’s generational businesses and 1950’s Chevrolet. It’s teachers, who are also coaches, who just happen to be family. It’s closed on Sundays and “love thy neighbor”. It’s Groundhog Day; everyday the same since forever. The same tourists in town for the fall foliage every year and the same locals at the Exxon every morning. The same car wash that someone’s granddaddy used to drive through on his way to the same high school that still stands today. The photographed areas throughout the town of Bryson City may not be occupied at the moment, they all have traces of human touch. Although these places present themselves static, standing still in time, I believe that the local community and visual vibrancy of this environment is what keeps the town alive.
